Throughout the course of the shadow puppet project in Spanish . I have learned quite a lot about Central America. For this project we learned about the three main causes of why people flee their homes. Home violence, gang violence, and sexual abuse. Originally we spent our class time reading articles and watching short documentaries about peoples day to day experiences in such harsh conditions. AS we broke up into groups, we allocated our time on writing a narrative of someone with our push factor. My group was Honduras, Sexual abuse. We needed to be creative when explaining such a touchy issue. I was able to write a narrative with my partner regarding a girl feeling as if the forest near by was stripping away her innocence and worth. We later translated the narrative into Spanish, in order to record and later use for our presentations. In order to present we had to make a scene that illustrated the young girls bed room and the near by forest. Before I started this project I didn't know pretty much anything about what was happening in Central America. If I were to explain what I learned I would reiterate most of the project. But one of the more interesting things that stood out to me was when we learned about all the young children that were trying to get to the U.S. They had to either leave a lot of their family behind and jump from train roof to train roof without getting caught or spend all their efforts in trying to find their family in America. I thought it was so interesting and sad that these children had to grow up so quickly with little awareness of how dwindled their childhood was. Its important to learn about these issues, because if we are so blind to whats happening then issues such as sexual abuse will take a longer to resolve. Spreading awareness is the start to any form of resolution. It saddens me when people make jokes about these issues, when they have no background information. These are serious topics that are taken the wrong way. Gang violence is not something this is sole based of division, its an act of gaining dominance. The first image is of our class at the history of man museum as we learned about different types of monsters in the monster exhibit. The second image is of Ika and I planing out our layout for our scene. We wanted to add forest theme as well as a little girls bedroom. The last image coincidences with what I was originally addressing. In our class we made tableous that demonstrated some of the feelings people felt in circumstances such as home violence, gang violence, and sexual abuse. My highlight of the project was when we were able to present our work at Salt Creek elementary school. We had a class of about 45 students and the conversations that arose was encouraging. We knew, walking away, that we made an impact. I enjoyed being in charge of a classroom environment, because it was a new perspective gained. We had to be very cautious when we spoke about these topics, because if we were to graphic, then our point might get shifted. For example. Once a students asked what we meant when the little girl felt like she was naked (des nuda). I carefully explained that because the large hands were grabbing at her she felt weak and vulnerable. I knew that getting more specific would only lead to a topic that was not necessary for that age group to understand what we were trying to portray. When we had to record, it needed to be in Spanish. I am not a strong Spanish speaker at all. My group had to make several drafts in order to create an engaging story that was sum what understandable. In order to do this, we broke our sections up and recorded separately and then pieced them together. I felt accomplished when I was finally able pronounce the words properly and for them into fluent sentences. Overall this was one the bigger challenges, because it was not just the concept of doing a task this took a lot of time and patience. We as well spent a lot of our time figuring out the details of our scene. Through the course of this semester I haven't grown as much as I wished to. I believe this was the case, because initially we had a lot of work and I was progressing on learning how to comprehend some basic structures of Spanish, but once we took a break for Festival Del Sol and then for Christmas letters I stopped learning very much Spanish. In order to grow more I want to do more duolingo and go to the library and get some Spanish children's books to help strengthen my reading abilities. A high light that I had was when I was working on my duolingo and I actually started to comprehend simplistic aspects of Spanish. I could mention Festival Del Sol and how I really enjoyed the event, but I don't know how to explain how it feels when you finally can start to understand something that you have been deaf from, from your whole life. My goals for Spanish are to continue to challenge myself, because learning a new language at my age is something that takes a lot of diligence to fulfill. As I mentioned before I want to find children's books to read as well as be steady passed at duolingo.
