Casa de Miedo (house of scare) was basically a haunted house that took up all of the freshman wing and part of the hall way including the court yard. The co-op was given the challenge to construct a haunted house in a little over a month. First we watched clips from haunted movies and discussed as a class how that clip was scary and what made it scary. We then made dream journals to collect our scary dreams to get ideas on how we can later make our scene scary along with our scary story's. We later were put into groups of four to five people witch were are team mates for our scene we later created. Casa de Miedo was the most difficult project iv'e had to work on, because This project involved a lot of construction such as building free standing walls, gathering our black plastic and measuring it (191 feet exact), wiring/hanging up plastic, building prison cells and of course tear down. It also incorporated the humanities aspect witch involved writing five drafts of our scary story, witch included getting many critiques by friends, family and senior. as well as having a grammar cafe were we presented several helpful ways to use grammar . We as well had to create four drafts of our scene drawing and create a props and materials list. With all this in mind we tried our best to have the six habits of the heart and mind as our foundation for this project witch is Refinement, Evidence, Mindfulness, cooperation, Perspective, and Perseverance. Scene Contributions For my scene contributions I have links below that will show you all the evidence you need to know for Casa de Miedo along with a description of what its about.
My Personal Growth for my own personal growth on Casa de Medieo I want to talk about how iv'e grown using the seven habits of the hear and mind. Refinement, Evidence, Mindfulness, cooperation, compassion, perspective, and perseverance. Refinement: For myself refinement is a big aspect of over all for successes. I remember when I completed my first draft of my scary story and I had a fixed mind set that it was perfect and I was ready to move on. After having it critiqued by both Sara and Ted my perception on refinement changed drastically when I realized it was no where close to being " fridge worthy". After complementing four more drafts I came to a conclusion that there no end to refinement. Although refinement is a tedious step its the difference between becoming a better writer verses not challenging yourself. After going through Casa de Medio the process of refinement had gotten easier , but at first was a big challenge, because at my other school we would really do more then two drafts of something and most of the time none. So when I was challenged to complete almost four drafts of my scale drawing for Casa de Medieo and five drafts for my scary story as well as refine the building process it was a step up. Over all refinement is very necessary in any situation, because it expresses the very best of your capability Evidence: Evidence is a very good thing to carry with you in any situation, because no matter how great your essay was , or how amazing your speech was no one will believe you or acknowledge that your statement was slightly true if you don't have evidence to back you statements up. So for Casa de Medieo we could say we built a haunted house at our school but who would believe us if they were not physically there. That's why we focused a lot on recording our work and keeping track of all are evidence as well as taking many photos that could help us in the long run for proof of Casa de Medios existence. This has defiantly helped my work ethic, because my point of view has definitely changed on whats necessary for success in life. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is known to be one of the most difficult habits of the heart and mind just because mindfulness is one of those things that you will always need to refine. From the very start of Casa de Medieo Ted and Sara have defiantly made it very clear that we all should be very mindful when it comes to being very attentive to what you and every one else is doing. When it came to the building stage we had to use a lot of tools such as Circular saws, screw drivers staple guns ex. if we were not mindful someone could have had a hospital visit, but because we were mindful that thankfully didn't occur. Of course we were always reminded of mindfulness when it came to goofing off and not being mindful of our surroundings. I feel as if I have grown in this HoHM just because I as an individual am a lot more aware of things witch is good to have, because when you are not focused you could end up making a mistake or accidentally hurting someone in the process of not being mindful. Cooperation: Cooperation for me has never really been much of an issue just because I normally am the one to take a lead position when it comes to being in charge. I don't really like to be left out of things so instead I take a stand for myself. I as well don't like to be dependent on other people for my grade or for doing all the work, because I like to feel important or in other words meaningful. At the end of the day I want to be proud of my work and not proud of someone else's if that makes sense. One thing I do still need to work on is cooperation with my team mates. With this project we were partnered in groups of four to five people that were chosen by Ted and Sara. I originally wasn't very crazy about my group just, because I didn't know them very well and I din't know how we would do as a group. As we became Confident on an idea for our scene we started to become a hard working team. As the weeks went by and are work started pilling up my team was so strong we could work straight through it. But as it came closer to the exhibition tempers started to turn and I felt like I was doing most of the work. I knew I was getting bossy, because I was stressing out witch triggered one of my team mates making them not want to work. As our team started to fall apart it seemed as if Crisdeana and I were literally the only productive contributes to our group. As crunch time came every one stepped up there game and even stayed till almost 9:00pm just to work on our scene. Over all cooperation is a touchy subject so just be aware of your team mates tigers and stay positive. Compassion: Compassion was a huge leap for me just, because I would keep everything school mannered and forget about peoples feelings. I would constantly have to remind myself to encourage my team mates, because from small things they mentioned to me it seemed as if they had other things on there minds. I would a lot of the time have to tell my team mates what to do in order for them to get work done, but not taking into consideration that maybe Someone else in my team would like to take a stand. Because I was the scene coordinator I had a big roll in my team and Casa de Medieo so I should have had more compassion that maybe one of my team mates wanted a roll of there own. Over all compassion is something I still need to work on just, because I get too caught up in things I my not be as compassionate as I should be. Perspective: Having a broad perspective was difficult at first for me just because when my group first came up with a great idea for our scene Ted gave us a challenge to come up with a completely new idea. When my team and I were so attached with our initial idea we had to keep a broad perspective. From working through Casa de Mideo I noticed that my team mates had really great idea especially when I took the time to listen to them; keeping in mind that quit people sometimes have the best ideas. There are many perspectives when it comes to working in groups and sometimes your not the only one with bright ideas. That's way having the opportunity to work on such a big project gave me time to practice my listening skills. Over all I feel like have have grown in perspective, because before from what iv'e compared I had more of a closed mind set and this project has definitely showed me that anything is possible if you are willing to try your hardest. Perseverance: I feel as if I have grown in perseverance, because I have deferentially persevered through Casa de medio to say the least. There were times were I thought it was impossible to get all the work need be by the exhibition. Through completing Casa de Medio I have a stronger grasp on what it is like to persevere through something. I defiantly was challenged this by far not easy to overcome, but with the power of perseverance and having the willingness to not give up took my group far in this project. Being at school from 7:30am to 6:00pm sometimes 9:00pm was not easy, but if that's what it took to get it done then that's what it took. That's what perseverance is all about. Cooperative Moments: One moment when I really felt like I was cooperating with my group was when It was in crunch time and we had to finish scary stories, vector analyses, and all the requirements for Casa de Miedo. My group distributed all the work evenly and we all concentrated and collaborated really smoothly. I did a lot of the construction witch I was very surprised about. I didn't expect my self doing the construction, but It all worked out and I got a lot of experience with power tools. My group was as well very compassionate towards me when I didn't quite understand the vectors assignment, but they eagerly took the time to walk me through it. My team as well were very cooperative when the majority of them stayed after school to work on our scene, because that was one thing that fell through with all lot of groups. Triggers: If I am completely honest there were triggers that got pushed some times we all didn't see eye to eye. We all knew what each others triggers were from the beginning, but when we were all stressed out I think that was the last thing we thought about taking into consideration. As I mentioned before I took more of a leadership roll knowing that a team mate said they didn't like it when someone took charge, but I honestly knew someone had to step up, because we couldn't just be wandering sheep. Knowing this I tried to talk to that team mate about the issue, but that didn't seem to fix the snotty attitude the person had towards me taking more of a leadership roll. After this project that person and I don't talk any more or find the need to. In other words we both formed a bad relationship through this project. Through the course of school I will try to become friends with this person and realize this was a stressful and difficult project who wouldn't get on there bad side every once and awhile. All that really mattered at the end was the final result which turned out I would say really well. Through this project I have learned that maintaining good relationships is more important then any project and that you could jeopardize a project by not being compassionate towards others triggers. Presentation of learning winter 2014 For this presentation we had to reflect upon our experiences for our first semester of freshman year and relate them to the seven habits of the heart and min. Witch are Refinement. evidence, mindfulness, cooperation, compassion, perseverance and perspective. For mine I as well related it to my experience in the San Diego Youth symphony, because music means a lot to me and it relates very well to the seven habits of the heart and Mind. As well as this gives gives Ted and Sara a chance to get to know me a little better. Below is my POL speak: Isabel Garcia The co-op December 16, 2014 POL speech 2014 Intro: Good morning and welcome to my first POL for my freshman year here at HTH. My name is Isabel Garcia and before I begin I want to share My initial thoughts about HTH. I originally was very unsure of myself I didn't know if I would fit in, because I figured everyone already had close friends from the middle school. Being home schooled K-8th grade is completely different from HTHs way of teaching. I knew the school had great opportunities by watching my older brother progress through the grades, but I wasn't sure If I personally would gain a good experience here. I started percussion lessons when when I was six years old remembering I cried the first lesson, because I was so intimidated. Three years latter I auditioned for the San Diego Youth Symphony and got accepted at the age of nine. Through the years I've grown as a percussionist, but that never could have happened if I wasn't curious yet intimidated. That's why HTH is such a great fit for me, because I've been challenged which ultimately has helped me grow through the habits of the heart and mind. Refinement, Evidence, Mindfulness, Cooperation, Compassion, Perspective and perseverance. Using these habits are a great practice for me to refine my attributes and characteristics. Music is a big part of my life and I want to relate music to my academics, because they are very similar. Body: Math has always been a difficult subject for me during the beginning of the school year when I was struggling on the geometry unit I became discouraged and started to cry, eighth grade all over again I would tell myself. But my table mates were extremely compassionate towards me. They understood my struggle and took the time to walk me through the problem.( show math tests) Through this experience I've noticed that compassion is so impactful and ever since then I take the time to help my classmates out with their struggles.( show group grade test)
-With music people have different perspectives on how to correctly play a piece, although I have nine years of experience. I'm always blown away about how my perspective has changed. Casa de Medio was the project were I have persevered the most, because I have seen myself personally grow. Yes, there were moments where I didn't even want to go to the exhibition I felt as if there was too much to do in the time provided, but I persevered.(show pictures on DP). I stayed after school almost every day and once stayed till eight o'clock at night building my scene. -Just like music I have to persevere as well there's always a concert after the development of you piece especially when you are given challenging music.( show current xylophone part), But when persevering through something there's always going to be a great result. Model United Nations is my very important sixth period. I've only attended one conference so far, but i've noticed as much as I had to personally prepare for the conference it was very much so a cooperative experience. I was able to form allies with other countries and work together to form a resolution paper.( show resolution paper). I was able to take the skills I learned in class and demonstrate them in a different environment. -This is much like playing a piece in an orchestra because we all have to work together to display the harmony of one. I've had to refine quite a bit in any project I've completed, but in particular Casa de Medio incorporated much refinement. For the scary story I was given many critiques and different perspectives and after reflecting upon my work and trying my best I completed a total of six drafts.(show drafts packet).I've noticed that I've definitely grown from seeing my final draft and remembering I thought it was perfect to my end result. There were definitely struggles, because I was so attached to my story and close minded at first. -But, I'm constantly refining my percussion techniques to demonstrate my best, Just remember refinement takes a lot of diligence. Through out all our projects we were told to collect our evidence, because it is very important in showing our progress and proof of the project. There was one particular project that I at first was very confused about and that was when we learned about vectors.( show vectors packet) Later on I really took my time and self advocated when it came to understanding the concept. This really paid off as you can see from my “Vectors gift”.
Improvement: Reflecting upon all my experiences through my projects I definitely want to work on being more cooperative and Mindful next semester. There are times when I tend to take control over situations when its supposed to be a group effort. I want to take a step back and give others a chance to be heard, because i'm not going to improve if the only insight i'm getting is mine. I as well want to work on being mindful, because again I tend to get wrapped up in my own thoughts and everything tends to be about myself. If I can become more mindful of my surroundings and peoples triggers then that can ultimately create more of an impact in the long run. Conclusion: Through out this past semester I have personally seen my self self grow in the habits of the heart and mind as well as others have acknowledged I have changed. My experiences here at HTH can not be replaced nor can the ones to come, because they are not just projects they are life skills that will follow me through college and beyond. I have learned to become more mindful, cooperative, and more compassionate as well as to always have an open mind when it comes to perspective. I want to always refine and keep my evidence always.
Survive to ThriveIn this project, you will be reunited as a Co-Op to create a television style mini-series that tells the story of a group of people who survive a dystopian, apocalyptic collapse and then begin to create a new world in which they thrive! You will create your mini-series story arc by drawing from your experience and knowledge about government and nation building in New World Challenge, the zombie apocalypse project launch, dystopian and utopian stories, series, and movies, and the research you do about what could cause the world to collapse as well as what could make it more sustainable. In DEaP, you will study sustainable systems and actually build machines as props that we could use to survive (and ones that would help us thrive more as humans). You will write, film, produce, build props, make costumes, and direct the series. We will exhibit in a film festival and have panels that talk about the creation of the series! -Teds DP Behind the Scenes Behind the scenes is basically all the detailed things we have to do for example acting, screenwriting, script board, filming, sound, music mixing, editing, props, costumes ex. on this page I will be discussion what I personally did to contribute to this project as well as my experiences. Writing Music: This was probably one of my most favorite parts of the project. I was able to write a song that was used in episode twelve. This was not not an assignment. It was just me playing around after school on a guitar and another student asked what I was playing and I had told them it was a song I had written which conveniently went well with the whole collapsed society theme. I only had written the verses so it was incomplete, but I asked a very talented Co-op member (Brina) if she could help me. She was able to write a beautiful chorus as well as bridge to the song. down below is one of our rough drafts of the song as well as a copy of the lyrics. Creating Episode Poster: For Festival Del Sol we wanted to have a showcase of what our future project would look like so a few Co-op members created a trailer as well as each episode created a movie poster to represented their episode. Adam and I made this poster that showcases a few lost characters with solar panels which they later use to build a solar array. In addition, you can see the title of our episode was "Voltage" and we had a project logo as well as the "Co-op productions title" Searching for good filming areas: MY groups scene was especially difficult to film, although we had a chaparral right next to our school to film. But in addition, we had a library scene, roof scene, and a warehouse scene (custodians room) as well as chaparral scenes. Our group had to make many arrangements in order to use the library and get teachers to drive us to our desired scene areas. Filming: Filming probably was one of the most stressful aspects of this project, because there were a lot of sound issues and it was very time consuming. For my episode (Episode 8) we had very complex filming settings. We had a total of nine scenes to shoot. A couple were in the chaparral, but we had shots on the school roof, Bonita Library, and A warehouse (custodians room). Which was fairly stressful to make sure we used our time wisely when we were occupying a teacher to help us on a roof or take us to the library. Editing: Editing was probably the second most stressful aspect of the project, because I personally had no idea how to transfer footage from an SD card let alone edit using Adobe Premiere. Adam did most of the editing in our group and we most likely would not have finished without him. He was gone to Texas for a couple school days and that was when I really had to sit down and learn how to edit to lay out all our footage ahead of time so that when Adam came back all he had to do was mess around with it and sink some audio. Acting: Acting from my point of view was incredibly fun. Although we had to always change into our costumes witch got frustrating and we had to memorize many lines and stay after school for hours at a time it was very rewarding. When I saw myself on the big movie theater screen I cringed, because of course you always want your self to look better then what reality gives you. But I was very proud of myself and all the hard work and dedication that went into it. In order to act we had to audition in front of our class to just make sure we were good enough for a movie. But even before that Ms.Sara had us play acting games in order to get us acclimated to acting in front of many people as well as get us prepared for the Junior theater teacher that give us even more techniques. Below are some notes to remember. Episode Build process Throughout this project we will be building real life props that will help us rebuild our collapsed society. For example for my group (group 8) we will be building a solar array which will help us have a consistent source of light as well as give other groups a source of energy for their particular needs. On this page I will later be discussing how we will construct our build as well as my individual experience with the build and what I learned from it. First we already knew that because of our screenplay we were going to build a solar array, but we didn't know how to. Mr.Ted was very kind enough to teach us a few things before we got started on our prototype witch you can see below. For the prototype we just needed to know a thought out, but not exactly perfect idea of what we wanted the solar array to look like.We new that the charge controller had to attach to the battery and the battery had to be attached to the inverter. Once we had it built and had a good idea of how it worked we presented it in front of the class and answered any questions they had. Once we finished that we had to look at the numbers and really figure out what the scaling would be. So as you can see below we all made scale drawings to represent our build. Once we were given the stamp of approval from Mr.Ted we had to make sure we had all the materials before we started pulling out supplies. As you see below this is our groups materials list. We already were borrowing the solar panels and any screws and power tools we needed from Mr. Ted. We just needed to plywood for the base and extra wood for the framing. Once that was approved we started to work. From the beginning of the project I wasn't sure if I would do much building, but It was Tyler and I who played more of the building role on this project. We originally were not allowed to use electric saws because we wouldn't be able to use them in a collapse, but when that exhausted us and gave us uneven cuts causing our alignment to be off. We were then given permission to resort to power tools. After three days of nonstop work, Tyler deserves to be acknowledged for all the work he put in. We finished although we didn't actually test it out, because of time constraints. It would have definitely worked ! Research Development Before any project we have to do a lot of research in order to successfully and most time effectively get our project completed. On this page I will be talking about all the research and all the work I had to do in order to really start working on the project, if that make sense. New World Challenge : New world Challenge was a mini class activity. In each class there was two nations that had to start from scratch. These two nations had to work together to form peace as well as figure out all the ins and outs of their GDP's and how that effects the working class. Each student was given a role. I was the House representative conservative which was in charge of approving presidential nominations, controls the budget, passes laws, I could veto the president etc. I believed the government should be able to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. We took over America and part of Canada I believe and whenever we wanted to make another law we had to have all the classmates sign the bill in order to pass. We were given challenges and our nation had to figure out to achieve our goals even through, perhaps a mad cow disease that was spread over our herds. Over all, this helped us get prepared for the project, because we learned how to cooperate well together and we had to basally start from scratch which we would have to do in a collapsed society. Burial Practice Presentation: Once we had our theme for our project we all needed to learn how to survive a collapse. The Co-op was thus separated into groups with different topics to present like shelter making, fire making, How to filter water, etc. I was given the topic of Burial Practices which was basically what would you have to do to get rid of an abundance of dead bodies. My Lost Knowledge research and the slide show are below. We as well learned about society collapses as what makes a society collapse. The Co-op was separated into group as and were given different societies that they had to research on how the collapsed. Below is the summary of Inca. Script Process One of the first things that we did was write a script, because it would be very difficult to actually start filming if we didn't know the camera angle or the verbal lines or what we were acting. On this page I will be sharing with you my groups final screenplay as well talk about my experience with writing a screenplay. Screenwriting : In our class we spent almost three weeks writing basically a very detailed story of our episode. Mrs.Sara recommended spending most of our initial time making sure we had a well thought out plan of our actors, shots, dialogue etc. to not have to waste time later. Down below is episode eights final screenplay. In our class we learned how to construct good characters as well as did many story seeds which are basically out lines of refinement on what our screenplay could use. I loved taking notes so I wrote out "baby screenplays" before we actually started writing our screenplay to better equip us when we did start writing. My experience with writing screenplays was that its not like an essay were it can stand by itself and can be finished when you complete the out line. Because we were using constant characters and the story line to stay constant we always had to refine and be open to refinement. I remember one night I had written a few pages of the screenplay and after a day of discussion we basically deleted the whole thing and started over. Screen writing was fun for the most part, but when we realized that episode seven had gotten cut we had to change some things on our screenplay, because if Billy dies in episode seven and in episode eight Roy trips over his grave that wouldn't make sense because Billy would have never died if that makes sense. Over all it was a good learning experience ! My Personal Growth My personal growth is something I like to reflect on, because after a project especially something as large as a mini series I would want to appreciate my growth. On this page I will give an overview of my personal thoughts and experiences of this project as well as share my perspective on how I think I have grown.
Through this project I believe that I have grown most with being perseverant and mindful. This project to be completely honest drained me physically and mentally. There was a lot of stress and pressure put onto each group to finish in such a small deadline. It was really difficult, because although we had a lot to do we didn't always have camera or audio supplies available to us and if we needed a ride to the library we had to plan ahead which would occupy more time we didn't have. I feel as if I grew in perseverance, because after this project any other project or deadline I had seemed minimal. If we had this project in the beginning of the year I probably would have fainted with all the work. I've noticed that I am better at time management and I am able to deal with stress a lot more easily. Currently I have more work then ever in school and all the music oriented concerts and auditions and I've been able to stay calm about it when normally I would have had panic attacks. I've grown in Mindfulness remarkably. Through this project I had to be very mindful about every thing.I had to make sure that we had everything planned out before shooting so we could use our time wisely, as well as make sure that we were taking the right type of footage so we didn't have to re-shoot. Not with just filming, but I always made sure I was careful when editing and transferring footage to make sure I didn't lose any footage or mess anything up. Another aspect of mindfulness was when we had to go on to the school roof. Mr.Ted was trusting us to behave and be mindful of our surroundings. Lastly I have noticed I have been more mindful about what people say and do. When I'm talking to Ms.Sara or Mr.Ted I really processes the information and think about why they may have instructed me to do something a certain way instead of just acting like a robot and doing what I was told. I struggled with Cooperation. Each group had to cooperate, and from my point of view, I'm fairly good at cooperating, but I believe I can cooperate in a better way. My group was amazing. We all took on a role and did our very best and we stayed after school when needed and we would work our hardest together. But when it comes to cooperating I tend to take control instead of it being a group effort; it just ends up being me bossing people around. I want to work on taking a step back and actually being cooperative in a nicer manner, because ordering people around is not cooperating. I would like to further work on being more Compassionate, because I always tend to get caught up into a project and make that my first priority to get finished which makes any relationship growth to be minimal. The difference between this project and Casa de Medio as far as growing as a group was that through this project I really got to know my group mates and enjoy working with them. In Casa de Medio I may have left the project with less of a friendship then we started off with, because work was all that seemed to matter. I want to work more on compassion, because I find it very helpful. For example Tyler had gotten a nose surgery and I was very compassionate towards him. I was proud of how I treated him, because if I had still told him to do something productive that wouldn't have been the nicest thing for me to have done. This has helped me grow as a person and taught me skills that I have used outside of school.
